Nickel Exchange

Each month you may elect to participate in a 5” square exchange called a nickel exchange. To participate, follow the rules outlined below.

Rules of the Exchange

1. Buy and prewash 1 yard of 100% cotton, high quality quilting fabric in the fabric color (or type) chosen for that month. It doesn’t have to be a solid fabric – just make sure that it “reads” as the chosen color.

2. Cut into accurate 5" squares. Make sure the selvedge is NOT included in your cut squares. (5” is the UNFINISHED size).

3. Stack the squares turning each pair slightly (it makes it easier to sort them). You should have 28 pairs (or 56 individual squares) per yard of fabric.

4. Place squares in a zip-lock bag marked with your name. If you elect to swap more than one yard of fabric, use a separate bag for each yard of fabric.

5. Bring your zip-lock bag(s) to the monthly guild meeting and place the bag in the designated “Nickel Exchange” container.

At the following month’s guild meeting, you’ll get your zip-lock bag(s) returned with a variety of nickels.
